Mr. O’Pella graduated from Drexel University, where he received B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering/Commerce and Engineering. He is a registered professional engineer with 15 years of diverse design and analysis experience in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, and fire protection systems.
Mr. O’Pella’s expertise includes HVAC system failures and control integration along with operational analysis, chiller, and boiler plant faults and remediation. Through the years he has worked extensively on the review and operational analysis of geothermal systems and their respective capacities/limitations. Mr. O’Pella is knowledgeable in HVAC DDC (Direct Digital Control) analysis and third-party integration as well as various International Code Council (ICC) I-code sets. In addition, he has experience in sprinkler system design and analysis in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 13 standards and ICC-series International Fire Code (IFC) fire codes, hazard classifications, and zone density requirements. He has designed commercial sprinkler systems for clients ranging from public schools and universities to daycare centers.
Mr. O’Pella has lectured on geothermal systems with particular emphasis on system operational effectiveness and analysis. He also has experience in the study and operational remediation of excessive building humidity issues and associated mold propagation. Mr. O’Pella has strong experience in Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) system requirements, commissioning, design, equipment selection, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) construction management, and building HVAC systems reviews. He is currently a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and also the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), where he served as the 2006-2007 Philadelphia chapter president and received ASHRAE’s Presidential Award of Excellence.
