Kenneth E. Sumner

Background

Dr. Sumner received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the Ohio State University in 1969. He then simultaneously worked for Gulf Oil Company solving production and refinery materials problems while he gained an M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

After Gulf Oil, Dr. Sumner worked for Foster Wheeler for 2 years where he selected materials and welding processes for refinery projects. He then joined Marathon Oil, and simultaneously obtained his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and performed failure analyses on oil refining, pipeline, production, and marketing equipment. His experience with Marathon included project management, where he led increasingly responsible positions on a wide variety of projects. Following retirement after more than 25 years with Marathon, Dr. Sumner works in the petroleum production and transportation industries.
