Paul McGonagle

Background

A chartered electrical engineer with over 30 years’ industry experience. Mr. McGonagle returned to higher education in 1994 and graduated with a First Class Honours degree in 1998. Having completed an accredited professional development scheme with National Air Traffic Services, he was incorporated by the Institute of Engineering and Technology in 2002.

Mr. McGonagle has spent a large proportion of his career in the Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution sectors. Ten years, ago the power system was dominated by conventional generation that injects large amounts of power into the extra-high-voltage transmission network, where it is transported to passive distribution networks, and delivered to end consumers at a number of voltage levels. The current power system is based on high penetration of renewable and low carbon distributed generation is quite different to this previous system. Integration of these new resources into all aspects of the power system has been key to ensuring the evolution of an economically efficient and effective system based on sustainable generation sources.

His work has involved technical due diligence, report writing, and working closely with the legal, regulatory, and insurance sectors to ensure standards of workmanship and equipment are fit for purpose in this industry. The work has also included plant and equipment damage evaluations, lightning and surge inspections, and the assessment and implementation of industry standards. Whilst working with the government on strategy and policy, Mr. McGonagle helped establish working groups to enable stakeholders to engage on a regular basis and shape the landscape of a rapidly changing industry.
