Mr. Nolan holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis and is a registered professional engineer in Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
Mr. Nolan’s professional structural engineering experience includes extensive design experience with structural design and renovation of steel, aluminum, and wood structures, including building frames, specialty structures for support of technical and mechanical equipment, large temporary outdoor structures, wood-framed building structures, theatre buildings, and theatre and entertainment building systems. Much of his work has focused on the design and analysis of unusual and complex steel, aluminum, and wood structures.
His residential and general structural engineering work includes the design of wood-framed residences, office buildings, and public event structures. Additionally, he has worked extensively in the analysis of existing modern and historic structures including commercial theatres and sports arenas. This work has primarily focused on the use of these structures to support new, large, temporary, or unusual loads.
Mr. Nolan’s forensic engineering experience includes structural investigations and analysis of brick masonry, steel, and wood structures including residential structures, commercial theatre and entertainment structures, and large permanent and semi-permanent outdoor event structures. This has included material testing and analysis, 3-D modeling, and analysis to ensure compliance with appropriate building and design codes.
In addition to his structural design and analysis experience, Mr. Nolan has extensive structural and mechanical design experience of rigging, rigging systems, machinery, and automation systems related to the entertainment industry. This includes hoist and winch design, design of rigging systems installations, analysis of new and existing structures to support rigging loads, and forces and condition investigation of existing rigging systems and building and temporary structures supporting rigging and specialty loads. He has worked extensively to review the load capacity of existing structures to support temporary or permanent rigging loads.
Mr. Nolan has worked extensively on the development of several ANSI codes and standards. These include:
• ANSI E1.21—2006 Temporary Ground-Supported Overhead Structures Used to Cover Stage Areas and Support Equipment in the Production of Outdoor Entertainment Events
• ANSI E1.39— Entertainment Technology - Selection and Use of Personal Fall Arrest Systems on Portable Structures Used in the Entertainment Industry
• ANSI E1.56—2018 Entertainment Technology—Rigging Support Points (Chairman)
He has participated actively in the Entertainment Services Technology Association for more than 20 years, commenting on and participating in development ANSI standards and trade group certifications. Mr. Nolan worked to develop the original body-of-knowledge for the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) for Arena Rigging. He is a Certified Rigger - Arena & Theatre and an ETCP Recognized Trainer—Rigging.
