Background

Mr. Schenk is a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator and a Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI). Through the International Association of Arson Investigators, Mr. Schenk is certified as a Fire Investigations Technician and Evidence Collection Technician. Mr. Schenk is also certified as a Fire Investigator and Fire Inspector through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Mr. Schenk started his public safety career as a firefighter and EMT with the Indianapolis Fire Department in 1987. He joined the fire investigations division in 2006, which created his foundation of knowledge of all aspects of fire prevention and investigations. Mr. Schenk has held many roles in the fire investigations division, including full-time investigator, backup investigator, and Commander of the Indianapolis Fire Department/Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Fire Investigations Division. As commander, in 2014, the division investigated over 800 fires. Mr. Schenk joined the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in 2006 to assist in his abilities and knowledge of interviewing witnesses. Previously, Mr. Schenk had a police background working as a reserve police officer with the Speedway Police Department from 1989-1998. Mr. Schenk joined Indiana Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team as a Rescue Technician to assist the country in natural and artificial disasters.

As an investigator, Mr. Schenk is qualified to investigate fire scenes, locate the area of origin, determine the cause, and collect and record samples for laboratory investigations. Written reports contain the root cause, analysis, photographs, witness statements, and a professional opinion of the cause of the fire. The fire investigator will incorporate a systematic approach using the Scientific Method outlined in NFPA 921 and 1033 in the fire investigations.
