Artificial stone countertops may contain more than 90% silica, a mineral that, when broken down into dust, can be harmful to humans. People who work with artificial stone countertops, such as those who work in construction or manufacturing, are at risk of developing silicosis, a spectrum of pulmonary diseases that may progress to respiratory failure or death.
