Are These Injuries Consistent with the Collision Dynamics?

Overview

After a lane-change collision in which one vehicle sideswiped another, a solicitor instructed Rimkus to assess whether the occupant’s claimed injuries were consistent with the collision dynamics.

Client Challenge

Testing whether a claimed injury genuinely matches the forces and motion generated by a specific collision, rather than accepting the claim at face value, is often central to disputes of this kind.

Our Approach

Our biomechanical engineering team reconstructed the collision and evaluated the vehicle damage using multiple scientific and engineering methods. These include comparative damage analysis, collision dynamics calculations, and comparisons with staged vehicle impact testing.  Occupant motion was then assessed using data from peer-reviewed volunteer research to assess expected forces and accelerations to the claimed body part injuries. Finally, these values were compared with established biomechanical tolerance data to assess the potential for tissue damage.

Value Delivered

The analysis found that the tissue damage claimed was not consistent with the collision dynamics, giving the solicitor an objective, evidence-led basis on which to challenge the claim.
