Brewery Contamination Analysis

Background

The craft beer industry has grown dramatically over the past decade, bringing beer lovers some of the best and most unique beers to the market. Unfortunately, beer can become contaminated through poor cleaning, contaminated ingredients, or human error. Beer yeast is what gives beer its unique flavor and, of course, its alcohol content; however, wild yeast is naturally found in the environment and when it enters the brewing process, this may result in damage to the beer and a product recall.

Services Provided

In one such case, the Rimkus Toxicology and Food Safety team was able to work with a brewery to provide laboratory analysis, confirming the contamination from wild yeast and identifying one of their starting ingredients as the source. This information provided an avenue of recovery and the brewery returned to normal operations.
