Background
Dr. Douglas Wiegand has a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), an M.A. in Applied Social Psychology from Claremont Graduate University, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech. His Ph.D. research focused on applied behavioral safety in community and industrial/occupational settings. He has considerable experience evaluating driving behavior and occupational hazards and helping clients understand issues related to occupational safety and health, transportation safety, occupational stress, and human performance. Prior to joining Rimkus, Dr. Wiegand was employed at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s Center for Truck and Bus Safety (CTBS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Dr. Wiegand has led several key studies focused on commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety exploring the relationships between CMV drivers’ body mass index, fatigue, and involvement in safety-critical incidents. He developed the Observer Rating of Drowsiness (ORD), a subjective scale used to assess driver fatigue, and led analyses of driver fatigue using naturalistic CMV driving data. His work has included research studies exploring safety concerns in the school bus industry, the impact of behavior-based safety techniques on commercial drivers, and training needs for drivers and managers of small passenger vehicle carriers. He has extensive experience with analysis of naturalistic driving videos to evaluate driver behavior, environmental conditions, and signs of driver fatigue.
At NIOSH, Dr. Wiegand served on a team that conducted workplace safety and health hazard evaluations across the United States. He has served as a subject matter expert on psychosocial factors such as demands at work and their impact on job stress and mental health. He contributed to health hazard evaluations across a wide range of occupational sectors, including manufacturing, oil and gas, healthcare and social assistance, education, agriculture, transportation, office work, and public safety.
