What is a common mistake you see less experienced investigators make in transportation?
We don’t see many mistakes at Rimkus as we have a robust technical review process, but less experienced investigators usually lack exposure to different types of collisions. Every collision will have a unique approach to the investigation of that collision.
Motorcycle accident reconstruction presents unique challenges compared to passenger vehicles. What physical evidence is most critical and easily lost at the scene?
The most critical and easily lost evidence at a motorcycle collision site are tire marks or motorcycle sliding marks on the roadway. It is very common for motorcycles themselves to not be preserved which can represent a valuable loss of physical evidence as well.
What aspects of transportation investigations would most surprise people unfamiliar to the transportation industry?
People are always surprised by the amount of digital information that a transportation expert can recover from a vehicle involved in a collision. I would also add that transportation experts tend to have a very broad skillset as Transportation matters can involve passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, all-terrain vehicles, pedestrians, etc. All of those matter types involve a unique approach to the investigation needed.

Along with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, Mr. Kevin Haney is certified by the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstructionist (ACTAR #1936) and holds a number of certifications in accident reconstruction, airbag control module downloads and analysis, and commercial vehicle braking systems.
He has over 15 years in areas of design, engineering, failure analysis, and accident reconstruction with an emphasis on commercial vehicle accident reconstruction.
Mr. Haney has performed accident reconstructions on thousands of collisions involving commercial tractors and trailers, passenger cars, pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles, trains, and large multi-vehicle collisions. He has reconstructed collisions in most states of the continental U.S. and Alaska.
