MEP Engineering disputes often involve technically complex findings and nuanced language, how do you communicate this to a non-technical audience?

Whilst findings are often derived from highly complex technical analysis that non-engineers may find daunting, the role of an expert is to communicate those findings in a clear, concise and accessible manner. My job is not simply to explain the engineering background and analysis, but to translate that into a narrative that a non-technical audience can really understand. Whilst engineers naturally focus on technical detail, an expert must de-mystify that complexity.

If you could give one piece of advice to anyone involved in property or construction what would it be?

Communicate! Poor communication between owners, occupiers, maintenance teams, clients, designers, and contractors allows minor issues to escalate. My advice is simple: communicate early and document formally. Clear records, reports, and meeting minutes create accountability, help resolve issues quickly, and prevent small problems from becoming costly, long-running disputes.

What are the most challenging or complex projects that you’ve worked on?

I have worked across numerous PFI assets spanning multiple sectors in both advisory and expert roles. The nature of PFI contracts, combined with the critical importance of public sector facilities such as healthcare, custodial, and emergency services, makes these appointments particularly challenging. Understanding the root cause of disputes is essential, not only to resolve current issues but also to identify lessons learned and help prevent similar problems occurring elsewhere in the future.

Tell us about a recent case or project where your specific expertise made a measurable difference to the outcome.

I acted on a major acute hospital where the operation of the standby power generation system had become a significant source of dispute between the parties involved. Acting on behalf of one party, I was able to simplify the technical complexities and present the issues in a clear and understandable manner, reaching agreement between the parties that not only maintained safe operation of the facility but also enhanced resilience, ensuring the continued delivery of a critical healthcare facility.
