Expert QuestionS & AnswerS

What is one assumption people commonly make in your area of expertise that’s wrong, and what’s the actual reality?

A common misconception in injury biomechanics is the emphasis on overall vehicle speed, delta-V and vehicle damage with relation to injury. While all those variables can influence the potential for injuries to occur, without the proper biomechanical analysis, injury assessment results are limited in usefulness. Injuries must be supported by the biomechanics of those injuries including range of motion, rate dependency, etc.

What questions should clients be asking when they’re vetting an expert in your field — and what answers should they be looking for?

While credentials and education are important, experience and specific degree programs can be more important. Not all degree programs or institutions are created equal, some programs have specific emphasis and research on injury biomechanics while others cover more general topics. Broad experience expanding into vehicle development, design and testing can offer unique insights not found with traditional book learning.

Background

Mr. Tamer Abubakr holds a B.S. degree in Biomedical Science from Western Michigan University and an M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Wayne State University, with a concentration in Impact Biomechanics. His experience includes injury biomechanics, anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs), vehicle safety, testing and validation, durability engineering, and data acquisition across automotive, electric vehicle, defense, and research environments.

His primary areas of consulting expertise include injury biomechanics, accident reconstruction, human injury causation, occupant kinematics, ATD development and testing, and vehicle safety. His current consulting work involves injury causation analysis in motor vehicle collisions; slip, trip, and fall incidents; falling objects; and other accidental events, including evaluation of occupant kinematics, seatbelt usage, airbag interactions, and injury potential.

Mr. Abubakr also has extensive hands-on engineering and leadership experience, having led multidisciplinary teams, developed advanced testing facilities, and directed automotive, motorcycle, small EV, and ATD testing programs. His combination of biomechanics expertise and practical engineering experience enables him to provide technical analysis and actionable conclusions for complex safety, injury, and engineering matters.
