Background
Mr. Todd Smith graduated with an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Southern New Hampshire University. Mr. Smith served with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (California) for 18 years. He dedicated 12 of those years serving in South Operations Patrol and North Operations Patrol, where he responded to and investigated thousands of fatal, injury, and non-injury traffic accidents as a Sheriff’s Community Services Officer. Mr. Smith also assisted other Sheriff’s Community Services Officers and Deputy Sheriffs with scene documentation, interviews, and determination of faults in hundreds of traffic accidents.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). As a member of this specialty team, he was on-call and would respond to fatal and major injury traffic accidents that occurred within any of the department’s 13 contract cities. As a member of MAIT, he would conduct interviews, scene inspections, and vehicle inspections, which included Event Data Recorder (EDR) downloads.
Mr. Smith was also a certified Field Training Officer and was tasked with training new Sheriff’s Community Services Officers on the various aspects of accident investigations, documentation, and officer safety practices.
After retiring from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Mr. Smith was hired as an in-house Crash Reconstructionist for MLG Attorneys at Law, a law firm that specializes in auto defects and product liability. Mr. Smith examined all cases through a forensic lens to determine the forensic viability, along with examining all intake cases for potential forensic hurdles.
