Ontario Building Codes and Regulations
Ontario’s Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB)
Ontario’s Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) is mandatory for buildings greater than 50,000 ft². It requires that building owners or managers report energy and water usage in efforts to enhance sustainable building practices and promote energy efficiency.

Deadline and Frequency:
Buildings three (3) or more stories tall:
- It is mandatory for owners or managers of buildings greater than 50,000 ft² to report energy and water usage annually by July 1.
- Data verification is required by a certified professional in the first year reported and every five years thereafter.
- Publicly-owned buildings are exempt.
Buildings may be eligible for ongoing or one-year exemptions if they meet certain criteria.
Inspection Requirements:
Ontario’s Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) initiative requires inspections to be performed by a team of design professionals with an architect or engineer acting as a registered design professional in responsible charge.

3.2.7.9. Emergency Power for Building Services
The Ontario Building Code 3.2.7.9. Emergency Power for Building Service is mandatory for buildings greater than 36m high, measured between grade and the floor level of the top story.
Emergency Power Systems (EPS): Buildings must be equipped with emergency power systems that allow essential building services to continue to operate during power outages. These systems include:
- Fire Alarm Systems
- Emergency Lighting
- Elevators
- Communication Systems
- Exit Signs
