Background

Mr. Richard Hazen received a Bachelor of Science cum laude in Applied Earth Science from Stanford University and a Master of Science in Geology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).  Mr. Hazen has over 40 years of experience in the field of engineering geology. He is licensed as a Professional Geologist (PG) and a Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG) in California.

His background includes petroleum production in the California Central Valley, as well as engineering geologic design and construction projects, and litigation support and expert witness engagements in southern California and Utah. He has also prepared the geologic sections of environmental impact statements for various projects in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. In recent years he assumed additional responsibilities mitigating contractual and operational risks for his employers.

Mr. Hazen has served as project manager for design projects in the residential, commercial, health care, transportation, and government sectors. His litigation support experience includes cases involving landslides and other forms of mass movement, regional subsidence, soil settlement, coastal bluff collapse, and collapsible desert soils. He is proficient in strategies involving contractual transfer of risk in California and in strategies to mitigate risk to subcontractors and design professionals. Mr. Hazen has published technical papers relating to the geologic mapping of desert landscapes using a combination of data obtained from multiple satellite sensors. In 1984, he was presented with the Graduate Student Professional Paper award by the Association of Engineering Geologists.

With respect to construction defect litigation, Mr. Hazen has been designated as an expert witness in dozens of matters, representing various plaintiff and defense parties. He has testified in deposition in approximately 30 cases. He has also testified in trial for three cases, all venued in the Superior Courts of Los Angeles County, California.
