Background
A cargo ship was carrying chemical monomers from the US Gulf Coast to northeastern Asia. When close to their destination, they collided with another vessel, causing a fire in one of the cargo holds. The fire was extinguished, but the incident overheated monomers in an adjacent compartment.
Services Provided
Rimkus was retained to review the monomer test data and assist with locating potential customers for the cargo. This monomer contained inhibitors to retard polymerization during the journey. The inhibitor concentration dropped over time, and needed to be supplemented. Rimkus reviewed sample test data taken by marine surveyors aboard the ship at various times and determined the material met nearly all quality specifications. The adjusters used this information to contact trading companies and locate a firm that could use the monomer and save the load.
