British Columbia Building Safety Regulations

Bill 22-2023 Strata Property Amendment Act

The Province of British Columbia passed the Strata Property Amendment Act on May 11, 2023. This legislation enables strata corporations to more easily install electric vehicle (EV) charging capabilities by lowering voting thresholds and facilitating the process of approving and installing electric vehicle charging stations as a strata corporation expense. 

Effective December 6, 2023, additional regulations to Bill 22 specify the process for approving EV charging and require strata corporations with five or more units to obtain an electrical planning report.

  • Strata Corporations in Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, and the Capital Regional District (excluding Gulf Islands) 
    • Filing Deadline: December 31, 2026
  • Strata Corporations in other areas of British Columbia
    • Filing Deadline: December 31, 2028
  • New Strata Corporations
    • Filing Deadline: Within five (5) years from the deposit of the Strata plan

Inspection Requirements:

The inspections mandated by the Strata Property Amendment Act, 2023, S.B.C. 2023 must be performed by  licensed engineers.
