Throughout his impressive career, Michael served as the Fire Chief of the Sterling Fire Department in Sterling, Illinois, and held the ranks of Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief, and served as the City’s Emergency Management Director for all man-made and natural disasters. Mr. Dettman has an in-depth knowledge of fire codes, suppression systems, and building construction. He has served on several boards and is a field staff instructor for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute.

As a fire investigator, he has conducted more than 1,300 fire investigations on a wide variety of fatal structure fires, residential fires, commercial fires, and vehicle fires. Currently a Captain in the Omaha Fire Department Fire Investigations Unit, Scott has been a firefighter with the Fire Department in Omaha since 2002. He is currently a sworn police officer with the Omaha Police Department, where his duties include investigating all crimes associated with fire/explosions and training new fire investigators.

He has more than 30 years of public safety experience holding numerous ranks for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department in Iowa. While at Cedar Rapids Fire Department, he was a member of the Hazardous Devices Unit Bomb Squad. He graduated from the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigations Ordnance Munitions and Electrical Maintenance School in 2005 and provides expertise in incendiary and explosives.
