Background
Iwan Parry is a Director within the global Transportation team. He has over 30 years of experience in road traffic collision investigation, road safety engineering, road safety research, and mobility innovation. Iwan has specialised training in traffic collision investigation, collision simulation and visualisation, in-vehicle data retrieval and analysis, CCTV/video analysis, and driver perception and response. He is a full member of both the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (ITAI); he sits on the ITAI Council of Management as portfolio lead for Conduct and Ethics.
Iwan’s role involves providing expert advice in collision investigation and conducting research into emerging topics in collision investigation. Iwan is an experienced expert witness having investigated hundreds of cases, providing written and oral evidence in respect of these investigations in both British and Australian Courts (including criminal, civil, coronial and military courts).
From the early 2000s, Iwan led teams pioneering the use of laser scanning, computer simulation and visualisation in road traffic accident investigation, including complex, high-profile criminal investigations and inquests, leading to the first uses of laser scanning and collision simulation in the UK’s Courts. As Head of Investigations for the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), Iwan led research projects which validated experimental data collection techniques and technologies for collision investigation, including the UK’s first event data recorder (EDR) downloads to support criminal prosecutions.
Iwan has led a number of innovative R&D projects within the motor insurance, automotive, and mobility sectors; these projects include developing and testing collision detection & data recording by telematics devices, and driver & road risk models from telematics data. He developed several automated vehicle research programs and shaped the technical vision for the Smart Mobility Living Lab, London’s connected and automated mobility (CAM) test-bed. Iwan was TRL’s technical lead for automated vehicle investigations as part of TRL’s delivery of the DfT’s Road Accidents In-Depth Studies (RAIDS) programme. He regularly presents to industry colleagues within investigations, legal, insurance and road safety on the process and method of investigating vehicle collisions, with a current focus on the future challenges of automated vehicles.
