Background
Stuart is a Chartered Architect, Forensic Architect, Expert Witness, and an accredited RIBA Client Adviser. He holds an MSc in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution from King’s College, London, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Construction Law and Arbitration from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Stuart has been appointed as a technical expert on several occasions on matters relating to the provision of internal and external fire protection such as fire compartmentation, cavity barriers, and combustible insulation, including in buildings over 18m, water ingress and professional negligence.
He has been involved in the assessment of design and workmanship defects under both traditional and design & build contracts across various construction types, including timber frame, rainscreen cladding, masonry walls, and pre-cast modular units. As an expert, Stuart has prepared advice notes and CPR-compliant expert reports for submission in adjudication and litigation proceedings, acting on behalf of housing association clients, developers, architects and building contractors.
Stuart worked for internationally respected architectural practices, including Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Herzog & de Meuron and John Miller, Su Rogers + Partners, where he was responsible for contract negotiation in various markets (for example, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Canada, and the United States). He was also responsible for ensuring compliance with all licensing and legal requirements, and for managing claims for international design practices.
He has undertaken studio teaching at Kingston, Cardiff and Dalhousie Universities (Canada). He has been an invited speaker at conferences on the design of cultural buildings, and has contributed to various publications, including Building Magazine, Domus, the Architect’s Journal and the Guardian newspaper. He is also an external examiner for the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architects’ Professional Examination Authority for Scotland.
