How Forensic Experts are Using Advanced Tools to Revolutionize Crash Investigations

Unveiling the Technology Driving Precision in Vehicle Accident Reconstructions

Rimkus’ Transportation experts use advanced technology to reconstruct vehicle accidents and help determine a collision’s causes and contributing factors. Our specialized expertise encompasses a wide range of techniques and tools used to analyze various data sources within a vehicle or thoroughly document a collision scene.

Vehicle Event Data Recorders

Our consultants have the skills and experience to examine the data from Event Data Recorders (EDRs), commonly found in the infotainment systems, electronic control modules (ECMs), and airbag control modules (ACMs) of modern vehicles.

ECMs, which control various engine functions and monitor the vehicle’s performance, often contain data related to speed, brake usage, and engine status. Similarly, ACMs can store pre-crash data, including deceleration rates, seatbelt usage, and the precise timing of airbag deployment. These modules can sometimes also capture post-crash data, which helps in evaluating the severity and impact of a collision.

Imaging Tools

We can also use cutting-edge imaging tools such as advanced photogrammetry and 3D laser scanning technologies to capture highly detailed and accurate representations of crash scenes. These tools enable our experts to create precise 3D models and point clouds, which allow us to accurately analyze the positions, distances, and damages involved in the accident.

As needed, we can also use our fleet of high-resolution drones to safely and efficiently document an accident scene before debris and evidence are cleared away.

    Case Study: Two-Car Vehicle Accident

An eastbound car and a northbound van approached an intersection on different roads. According to the crash report, the car entered the intersection and was contacted on the right side by the van, injuring the car’s driver and passenger. Rimkus was retained to reconstruct the collision, and our rapid response team mobilized to the scene.

During our investigation, we photographed the scene, measured critical evidence, and downloaded and reviewed the EDRs of both the car and the van. Click below to learn about the conclusions we made based on our analysis.

Enhance Your Understanding: Continuing Education Webinar
Technology in Crash Reconstruction is a one-hour continuing education course designed to provide familiarity with the latest tools used in the process of collision reconstruction, from field investigations through analysis. By watching this presentation, participants can learn about data recorded by the EDR systems within a vehicle and how it can be used or misused in reconstruction scenarios. Case studies, state and federal EDR laws, and potential issues involved with EDR use are also discussed.
